ケンブリッジを訪問しました（バイオデザイン部門長　中川）

11月30日から12月3日まで英国・ケンブリッジを、CRIETO開発推進部門、インターンなどイノベーションにかかわるメンバーで訪問して参りました。
英国はライフサイエンス、工学、データ科学など多くの領域で世界をリードし、医療機器や創薬を含む数々の事業を生み出しています。
今回は、医療機器を軸にライフサイエンス、データ科学、工学、その他の領域をいかにしてクロスオーバーさせながらインパクトのある価値を生み出し続けるか、普段からもっている様々な課題を解決する端緒となるべき訪問です。

ケンブリッジコンサルタンツは1960年に創立され、戦略立案から開発、量産移管までを一気通貫で支援し、大学発の知見を含む幅広いディープテックイノベーションを加速しています。同社は、ケンブリッジ大学を中心に形成された「ケンブリッジ現象」と呼ばれる世界的なイノベーションエコシステムの発展において、中心的な役割を果たしてきました（参考：[1] https://cambridgephenomenon.com/phenomenon/, [2] https://www.wired.com/sponsored/story/how-the-cambridge-phenomenon-continues-to-drive-innovation-hsbc-uk/, [3] Kate K. and Charles C. 今回、ケンブリッジコンサルタンツのメディカルテクノロジー事業部・事業開発部長の松井 拓也様を中心にキープレイヤーと課題ベースで意見交換を行い、今後の共創に向けた多くの示唆を得ました。とくに、コロナのパンデミックの際に英国政府の要請を受け、約6週間で、ゼロから実用レベルの人工呼吸器を開発した事例を含め、戦略から開発・量産移管までを一気通貫で支援する体制はまさに日本に必要なものと肌で感じました。また、ケンブリッジ大学関連の研究施設も複数訪問し、今後に向けた有用な意見交換をすることができました。移動中にはワトソンとクリックがDNAの二重らせん構造について議論を重ねた（であろう？）パブや、ケンブリッジを構成する31のカレッジを巡り、アカデミアの歴史と文化を体感しました。

Visiting Cambridge, UK.

From November 30th to December 3rd, members of our innovation team, including Department Director, Dr. Nakagawa, members of Development Promotion Department, CRIETO, Experience Design and Alliance Section (EDAS), Tohoku University Hospitals, and interns, visited Cambridge.

The UK is a world leader in many fields, including life sciences, engineering, and data science, and has spawned numerous businesses, including medical devices and drug discovery. During this visit, we focused on medical devices and explored specific actions to create value that will have an impact on society by crossing the boundaries between life sciences, data science/engineering, and other fields.

Founded in 1960, Cambridge Consultants provides end-to-end support from strategy planning to development and mass production transfer, accelerating a wide range of deep tech innovations, including university-derived knowledge. This time, we held an issue-based exchange of opinions with key players, led by Takuya Matsui, Business Development Manager, MedTech, at Cambridge Consultants, and gained many insights for future co-creation. In particular, I felt firsthand that a system of end-to-end support, from strategy to development and mass production transfer, is something that Japan needs, including the case of developing a practical ventilator from scratch in just 6 weeks at the request of the UK government during the COVID-19 pandemic. We also visited several research facilities related to Cambridge University, where we were able to exchange useful opinions for the future.
Furthermore, during the trip, we visited the pub where Watson and Crick had their discussions, and toured the 31 colleges that make up Cambridge, experiencing the history and culture of academia firsthand.
