2026 World Medical Innovation Forum: Re-inventing the Academic Hospital for Biodesign Co-creation
Sept 22, 2026
We organized session with Prof. Mark Richardson (Dept. Neurosurgery, Mass General Brigham / Brain Modulation Lab) at World Medical Innovation Forum (Sept 22, 23 Westin Boston Seaport District) .
Starting with introduction of our customer discovery program (Academic Science Unit: ASU) and Hospital Testing Lab (Open Bed Lab: OBL) ,followed by presentation from our co-creation partner company (Akiko Okubo, Executive Officer, Sumitomo Bakerite / Heinz Lubenau, PhD, Chief Executive Officer. NEC Bio Therapeutics GmbH / Masaki Kato, Development Lead. Asahi-Intec) about their experience with Tohoku University Hospital and their potential touchpoint with not only MGB and Boston community, but audience from many parts of the world.
Thanks to our panelists and many important questions from the audience, so many insights!
We sincerely thank WMIF organizing members for this opportunity, and Consul General Seiichiro Takahashi for supporting us!
We also visited several distinguished lab in Boston together. We also thanks Kisei Hirobe (Alps Alpine) for joining us!

Agenda. Agenda – 2026 World Medical Innovation Forum
Session Overview
Japan’s declining birthrate, aging population, shrinking workforce, and rising healthcare demand foreshadow challenges many countries will soon face. As health systems worldwide work to extend healthy life expectancy with limited resources, academic hospitals must reinvent themselves beyond diagnosis and treatment. Since 2014, Tohoku University Hospital has embedded 1,900+ researchers from 80+ companies in clinical settings to identify unmet needs. This panel explores how the ecosystem translates clinical insights into scalable, globally transferable solutions, transforming academic hospitals into rapid-response engines for future demographic challenges, a session exploring how to achieve this transformation.
